Your support suggested the solution to my problem saved me several hundred dollars in consulting time with our local “gurus”. The two year subscription to TZO.COM was one of the best investments I’ve ever made.

Using TZO DDNS with your HP MediaSmart Server (EX485/EX487) - Part 1

Introduction

TZO Dynamic DNS services are integrated directly into each HP MediaSmart server. THis tutorial covers the second generation HP MediaSmart server, models EX485/EX487. If you have an older model please see our other HP MediaSmart tutorials for details specific to that model

When you purchase an HP MediaSmart server, you can choose from a free year of the TZO Dynamic DNS Services using a branded HP domain name, or you can select to use the TZO Custom Dynamic DNS service and use your own custom domain name such as YourName.com

Requirements

This tutorial requires an HP MediaSmart first generation EX485 or EX487. You must also have gone through the initial install of the product and are ready to finalize the configuration of the server by enabling remote access with TZO.

  1. 1Selecting Remote Access from the Home Server Console

When you first complete the initial setup of the HP MediaSmart, you will see a screenshot similar to the one shown below. This is the main Windows Home Server console modified by HP and is the starting point to enable remote access for your server. In order to setup the TZO DDNS and enable remote access, you need to click on the REMOTE ACCESS button in the left-hand menu of the screen as shown below.

  2. 2Enabling Remote Access

Once you click on the REMOTE ACCESS button, you will see the screenshot shown below. In order to share photos with friends and family, you should TURN ON WEB SITE CONNECTIVITY . Click the TURN ON button under WEB SITE CONNECTIVITY to enable external website connectivity.

  3. 3Configure Remote Access - Router Configuration

Next, you should configure the router. Under the ROUTER section, click SETUP to configure the automatic configuration of your router and you will see the screenshot shown below.

  4. 4Choosing your HP MediaSmart Remote Access Domain

Once you configure the router, it’s time to setup the DOMAIN NAME for remote access use. When setting up the domain name, you have 2 options when choosing to use TZO. Select the option that’s best for you

Domain Name Option 1) Use TZO.COM Dynamic DNS FREE DDNS service for 1 year under a Branded HP domain name such as Yourname.HPShare.net. There are several HP branded domain names to choose from. This is the default setting and is free for 1 year and $9.99 per year afterward.

  5. 5Selecting the TZO Custom Domain Service

Domain Name Option 2) Use TZO.COM Dynamic DNS with a CUSTOM DOMAIN NAME service for 1 year. Run your HP MediaSmart server with you OWN PERSONAL domain name! This option allows you to register YOUR OWN CUSTOM DOMAIN NAME such as TheSmithFamily.net, Your-Own-Company.com, etc. This service is a paid service for a nominal fee yet allows a highly customized domain name for your HP MediaSmart server.

  6. 6Configuring the TZO Basic Service on your HP MediaSmart

Once you select the HP Personal Domain Name option, you will see the screenshot below. Click NEXT to Continue.

  7. 7Entering in your Contact Information

This step shows how to use option 1, the free HP Personal Domain Name by TZO.COM. If you choose option 2 and wish to use your own custom domain name, TZO.COM can register a domain name for you, or you can transfer a domain name you already own to TZO. The setup process is nearly identical and this tutorial can be used as a guide for option 2. The main difference being the domain name, registration and credit card details.

You are now asked to input your Contact information as shown below. This information is required for TZO to contact you if there are any problems with your account of if your account is going to expire. Input your First and Last name as well as your Email Address and click next to continue.

**Your security and privacy is important to us, TZO does NOT sell or provide your contact information to anyone..

  8. 8Entering your Domain Name Selection in the HP MediaSmart

You are now asked to input your choice for a domain name as shown in the screenshot below. Select a domain name that fits best for you or your business and click Next. If you do not find a domain name that you prefer, you can cancel and restart the Domain Name selection and choose TZO CUSTOM DOMAIN name for your own personal domain name selection.

  9. 9Confirming your Domain Name selection

You are shown your domain name summary as shown in the screenshot below. Check that the domain name is correct and click Finish.
