Remotely Access Your Linksys Wireless-G IP Camera (Step 2 - TZO client configuration)

Introduction

The Linksys Wireless-G Internet Home Monitoring Camera (WVC54GCA) is a great way to keep a remote eye on your office or property. Using the camera's support for the TZO service means you both get an easy-to-remember domain name, and TZO will keep track of your Internet connection's IP address. Your Internet IP address is usually subject to frequent IP address changes, but the TZO service will monitor for this and keep your domain name pointed at your current Internet address.

What this means is, by using the TZO service, you can remotely manage or monitor your camera from anywhere on the Internet. Your camera comes with 1 year of the TZO Dynamic DNS service FREE.

This tutorial walks you through configuring the Linksys camera's TZO Client, which is one of the steps to getting your camera, router, and TZO working together.

Requirements

This is the second tutorial (out of 3). Please be sure you have followed the first tutorial in this series, linked below.

Using TZO to view your Linksys Wireless-G IP Camera over the Internet (Step 1 - static LAN IP)

  1. 1Login to the Camera

In your web browser's Address or Location bar, enter http://192.168.1.200. On the camera's Welcome page, press the button labeled "Advanced Configuration", and enter your camera's admin username and password (The default username is admin and password is admin).

  2. 2Choose OPTIONS from the left menu and then enable DDNS

After clicking Options in the menu, you can choose from several options in the right portion of the webpage. Scroll down to "Enable DDNS", enable (check) that option.

Press "Enable DDNS" option, then click the TZO "Web Site" button and continue onto the next step..

(NOTE: The example OPTIONS screenshot contains TZO account information already filled out. Only after returning from the TZO-Linksys website will you will have the information you need to fill out these DDNS settings)

  3. 3Linksys DDNS - TZO Free Trial - Welcome Page

After clicking the TZO "Web Site" button, your web browser should bring you to the website "Linksys Dynamic DNS signup portal, powered by TZO.COM".

The purpose of this website is to allow you to register for one FREE year of TZO service. When the time comes, you can return here or you can order/renew service. This tutorial walks you through all of the website questions so you can choose the correct options.

As this network device is a Linksys Camera, select that option - then press the Next button to continue.

  4. 4Linksys DDNS - TZO Free Trial - Camera Selection

If your Linksys Camera is a "Linksys Wireless-G Internet Home Monitoring Camera" type, select "Yes" to that question - then press the Next button.

  5. 5Linksys DDNS - TZO Free Trial - Trial or Order

If you have never used your FREE 1 year TZO service with this particular camera, please choose "Try TZO Dynamic DNS for 1 Year FREE". You can choose this option once per eligible camera.

If you have used your free year already, choose "I am ready to place an order".

  6. 6Linksys DDNS - TZO Free Trial - Enter the Camera MAC address

On this page, you are asked for your camera's MAC address, which is printed on a label on the back side of your camera. The photograph demonstrates where you should look for your MAC address.

Enter your Camera MAC address, then press the NEXT button.

  7. 7Linksys DDNS - TZO Free Trial - Enter your domain name selection

Now you may choose your domain name. Please notice how the domain name is selected - it is a simple text field (which you should type one "word" into) followed by a selectable list of domain name endings. Both of these values will combine to give you your domain name,

For example - in the screenshot below, "YourDomainName" was typed in, and this goes together with "MyLinksysCam.Com". The actual (fully-qualified) domain name will become "YourDomainName.MyLinksysCam.Com".

  8. 8Linksys DDNS - TZO Free Trial - Enter your email address

Before your free trial can be activated, you must provide your valid working email address. If you do not see your TZO activation email within 15 minutes, please check your Spam/Bulk folder (if that is where it was delivered to, please flag it as 'not spam').

Do not worry, TZO will not send you any spam and we will not sell or exchange your email address with anyone.

In one year's time (just before your free trial or paid service ends) TZO will email you an order reminder and instructions. If you have changed email addresses, be sure to notify TZO Support so you get that reminder.

  9. 9Using your emailed TZO Account Details

Once you have your email from TZO, open that email and keep that window open as you will need it.

?Troubleshooting

  • Before continuing to the next and last tutorial, you should verify there were no errors here. Within (at most) 15 minutes, your camera's Options>DDNS settings page should update to show the most recent status of your account. You may need to click away or reload the page to see the most recent details.

If there was a serious error - for example mistyping any of your TZO account details - then that error should be displayed, and the DDNS option will be disabled until the problem is fixed.

If everything looks good, then you should continue to the next part of this tutorial (Port forwarding), linked below.
